In 2014 Rie Kimura (baroque violin) and Pieter-Jan Belder (harpsichord and fortepiano) collaborated for the first time on a recording of Duphly’s works for keyboard. This collaboration resulted in a successful tour through Japan, after which they decided to start a less ad hoc partnership. They explore the great and vast repertoire for violin and keyboard of the 18th and early 19th century. Rie and Pieter-Jan search for an energetic and intense music-making by focusing on the rhetorical qualities of the music from this era, which was as important in 17th century music as in the music by Mozart and Beethoven.
In 2017 they released a recording of the complete C.P.E. Bach works for violin and keyboard on the label Resonus Classics. The Dutch newspaper the Volkskrant considered it one of the 50 best CD productions of 2017. The recording was also highly praised in The Observer (UK). 2018 will see the release of a CD of Mozart sonatas and work will begin on a recording of the violin sonatas of Johann Sebastian Bach.
Rie Kimura is a baroque violinist from Japan. She won the 2010 Premio Bonporti Baroque Violin Competition in Italy where she was also awarded the public prize. Her solo violin playing has been praised for it’s “strong personality imbued with expression and rhetoric,” (The Strad) while her outstanding skills as a chamber musician mean that she is a violinist very much in demand. Alongside Fantasticus, of which she is a founder member, Rie plays regularly with the likes of the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Bach Collegium Japan, Apollo Ensemble and De Nederlandse Bachvereniging. Her first solo recording, “Tartini & Veracini” was released in June 2015 receiving a rare 5-star review from Dutch national newspaper, De Volkskrant.
Rie Studied baroque violin with Lucy van Dael at the Amsterdam Conservatory where she graduated “cum laude”. She has won numerous prizes throughout her career including the top prize in the 2008 Yamanashi Early Music Competition (Japan) and various ensemble prizes at the Bruges and Amsterdam Early Music Competitions.
More recently she performs as a duo partner of harpsichordist and fortepianist Pieter-Jan Belder with whom she recorded the complete violin sonatas of C.P.E. Bach. This recording was received with great acclaim in Holland as well as abroad – De Volkskrant included the CD in their selection of the 50 best CD productions of 2017.
Since 1991, Pieter-Jan Belder has recorded more than 130 CD’s with which he gained international recognition and reputation as a harpsichordist. He contributed to the complete edition of all Bach’s works for the harpsichord (13 CD’s). These successful recordings were followed by the recording of the complete works of Domenico Scarlatti for the harpsichord (36 CD’s) and the keyboard works of Soler (8 CD’s) and Rameau (3 CD’s).
With his own ensemble Musica Amphion he realised great projects as well, such as the recording of the complete works of Corelli, Telemann’s Tafelmusik, Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto’s and harpsichord concerts. A complete recording of chamber music of Henry Purcell was realised as well and more recently eight CD’s were released, completely dedicated to the works of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.
Belder is currently working on a complete recording of the Fitzwilliam Virginalbook, Bachs Goldberg variations, a double album with ostinato compositions from various composers and C.P.E. Bachs violin sonatas with violinist Rie Kimura.
Ever since 2005, Belder has been a frequent guest in the Royal Concertgebouw as conductor of Muscia Amphion. In 2011 he performed Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas with Sarah Connolly and Collegium Vocale Gent. In 2012 he conducted Musica Amphion and Collegium Vocale Gent in a Handel and Vivaldi programme, also in the Amsterdam Concert Hall. Belder was winner of the NDR-Musikpreis in Hamburg in 1997 and winner of the International Bachwettbewerb Leipzig in 2000.
Belder is currently working on a complete recording of the Fitzwilliam Virginalbook, a complete recording of Bach’s harpsichord works, Dandrieu’s harpsichord and organ works as well as several cd’s with Mozart violin sonatas with Rie Kimura. He teaches early music at the Musikhochschule Lübeck.

Klavecinist/fortepianist Pieter-Jan Belder en barokvioliste Rie Kimura werkten voor het eerst samen in 2014 met de opnames van de complete werken van Jacques Duphly, een van de grote Franse klavecinisten uit de 18e eeuw. Deze samenwerking resulteerde in een succesvolle serie concerten in Japan, waarna zij besloten de samenwerking een minder ad hoc karakter te geven. Zij concentreren zich op het uitgebreide repertoire van de vioolsonates met klavierbegeleiding. Hun spel wordt gekenmerkt door een vitaliteit en intensiteit die bereikt wordt door zich te richten op de retorische eigenschappen die in de werken van Mozart en Beethoven even belangrijk zijn als in de muziek uit de 17e en de vroege 18e eeuw.
Hun opname van de complete werken voor viool en klavier van C.P.E. Bach verscheen in 2017 op het Engelse label Resonus. De Volkskrant schaarde deze opname onder de beste 50-producties van 2017. Ook in de Engelse krant de Observer verscheen een zeer positieve recensie van deze cd.

Pieter-Jan Belder studeerde blokfluit en klavecimbel aan de conservatoria van Den Haag en Amsterdam. In 1990 behaalde hij voor beide instrumenten het diploma Uitvoerend Musicus. Sindsdien treedt hij veelvuldig op in binnen- en buitenland. Vanaf 1989 was hij vaste medewerker van het Radio Kamer Orkest waar hij werkte o.l.v. onder andere Frans Brüggen, Ton Koopman en Philippe Herreweghe. Daarnaast is hij als continuospeler actief in diverse ensembles, waaronder de Nederlandse Bachvereniging, het Orkest van de 18e Eeuw en zijn eigen ensemble Musica Amphion. Verder begeleidde hij solisten als Johannette Zomer, Peter Kooij, Rémy Baudet, Nico van der Meel, Sigiswald Kuyken, Harry van der Kamp, Wilbert Hazelzet en Saskia Coolen.
Vanaf 1991 maakte Belder meer dan 130 Cd-opnames waarmee hij internationale erkenning en bekendheid als klavecinist verwierf. Zo werkte hij mee aan een complete editie van alle Bach klavecimbelwerken (13 cd’s). Momenteel werkt hij aan een uitgebreide selectie van het Fitzwilliam Virginalbook, klavierwerken van C.P.E. Bach, klavierwerken van Sweelinck (het Sweelinckmonument van het Gesualdo Consort), Marais opnames met gambist Rainer Zipperling.
Tevens hij de initiator van een meerjarig project ‘Bach Contextueel’, een samenwerking van Musica Amphion en het Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam. Het doel van dit project is om middels concerten en cd-opnames de cantates en orgelwerken van J.S. Bach thematisch met elkaar in verband te brengen. Verder besteden zij hiermee aandacht aan de functie van het kerkorgel als continuo instrument naast het klavecimbel en worden de cantates in principe enkel bezet uitgevoerd.
Sinds 2005 is hij als dirigent van Musica Amphion regelmatig te gast in het Concertgebouw te Amsterdam. Hij voerde daar in 2011 o.a. Purcells Dido & Aeneas uit met Sarah Connolly en Collegium Vocale Gent. In 2012 dirigeerde hij Musica Amphion en Collegium Vocale Gent in een Handel- en Vivaldiprogramma, eveneens in het Amsterdamse Concertgebouw.
In 1997 was Belder prijswinnaar van de NDR-Musikpreis 1997 te Hamburg. In 2000 werd hij winnaar van het Internationale Bachwettbewerb Leipzig. Hij is docent oude muziek aan de Musikhochschule Lübeck
